Avoiding Plagiarism- Instructor Resources

Page history last edited by Jon Brammer 14 years, 9 months ago

There are many of resources available for instructors to both teach how to avoid plagiarism and to check for plagiarism in drafts submitted by students.  The list below is only a sampling of what can be utilized in this ongoing effort.  The student resource page for avoiding plagiarism can be viewed here.

TRCC Library/LRC

http://www.trcc.commnet.edu/library/Guides/how-to-guides.htm

On-line resources include tutorials on source identification and avoiding plagiarism.  Reference librarians are available for both in class instruction and individual student appointments during regular library hours.

3.       Safe Assign through Blackboard Vista

http://my.commnet.edu/cp/home/loginf

This tool is available through Blackboard Vista shells and works in a similar fashion to the Turnitin.com service.  Faculty can create assignments with the Safe Assign designation, and they can set up the protocol so students can submit essays to check for possible plagiarism before they hand in a final copy.

4.       Google Text Searches

http://www.google.com/

This standard search engine can be used to search for specific text strings.  Simply type in the text string that seems to be unique to the draft in question and place quotation marks around it.  The search engine will find matches if they are available.

5.       Bedford-St. Martin Tutorial

http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/plagiarismtutorial/default.asp?s=&n=&i=&v=&o=&ns=0&uid=0&rau=0

Students can sign up free with any e-mail account.  Site includes information on managing a research project, note-taking, differentiating sources, how to document, and tactics for avoiding plagiarism.

6.       I-Cite CD-ROM

http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/newcatalog.aspx?isbn=0312441797

This CD-ROM is a good visual tool for explaining the basics of plagiarism and documentation.  It can be packaged for free with most Bedford-St. Martins texts.  The stand alone price is reasonable for a CD-ROM supplement.

7.       Doing Honest Work in College by Charles Lipson

http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/lipson/honestcollege/index.html

This text is useful as a supplement if the cost of a writing handbook is prohibitive.  Chapters include the basics of academic honesty, quick reference guides to APA and MLA, and outlines of a variety of other citation styles.  Stand alone price for the paperback version is very low.
